Scheduled Inspections

It is recommended that regular aircraft inspections be performed by either the cabin crew or the maintenance technicians at regular intervals, such as annual inspections, 50- and 100-hour inspections, preflight checks, or phased inspections that ensure an aircraft is in good working order.

Annual Inspections

From FAA (FAR 91.409) no person may operate an aircraft unless, within the preceding 12 calendar months, it has had–
(1) An annual inspection in accordance with part 43 of this chapter and has been approved for return to service by a person authorized by Sec. 43.7 of this chapter; or
(2) An inspection for the issuance of an airworthiness certificate in accordance with part 21 of this chapter.

50-, 100-, 150-, and 200- Hour Inspections

Aircraft that are powered by pistons are typically subject to 50- or 100-hour inspections, while aircraft powered by turbines are subject to 100-, 150-, or 200-hour inspections.

Phased Inspections

In the case of airplanes with inflexible flight schedules, continuous inspections or phased inspections are carried out when a long period in a maintenance hangar is not feasible, or when a maintenance manual specifically calls for continuous inspections.

Pre-Flight Inspections

Pre-flight inspections typically involve walking around the aircraft and visually inspecting the flight control surfaces and fuselage for wear. Battery, cabin, avionics, and cockpit should all be inspected during pre-flight inspections.

Special Inspections

In some aircraft maintenance manuals, Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 refer to “special inspections”. As part of Chapter 4, FAA inspections are mandatory and may include the removal or replacement of certain bearings or retirement items on landing gear.

Unscheduled Inspections

Whenever a component of an aircraft malfunctions or there is a concern for error, unscheduled aircraft inspections occur. Typically, unscheduled inspections are conducted when issues are found during pre-flight inspections, or during annual, scheduled, hourly, or phased inspections, or when problems arise during flight operations.
